Historic church buildings can draw on preservation funding that ordinary repair budgets can't reach. Sources include national preservation nonprofits, the National Park Service's Save America's Treasures, state historic preservation offices and the National Fund for Sacred Places. Public preservation money usually covers only the building envelope and structure (roofs, masonry, windows and foundations), not worship spaces or religious imagery. Listing on the National Register of Historic Places, or being eligible for it, often matters. Ask your State Historic Preservation Office about local rules.
